The Best Fantasy-Themed Board Games

Posted by Payton Wilmott On 0 comments

Fantasy settings are a wonderful fit for board games. There's something about orcs, elves, and magic spells that translates perfectly to cards and cardboard. And of course it doesn't hurt that the venn diagram of people drawn to wizards and people drawn to board games is basically a circle. As you might expect, board game designers have caught on, and there are so many good fantasy-themed board games out there as a result. There are plenty of sword and sorcery adventures. But in the world of board games, fantasy can mean anything from imaginative intrigue to alchemical academia.

So, grab a sword and a spellbook and head into the unknown as we explore what "fantasy" meant to a slew of different designers — and the best board games that came out of it.

As the major announcements from the MWC are getting discussed, Evan Blass tweets a photo of the alleged Huawei P20 Lite, even though it isn't even set to be announced for another month. For a while, Huawei's P20 was rumored to have three rear cameras, but when Blass tweeted the supposed picture of the P20 with a notch in the display and dual rear cameras, we can pretty much hold our breaths until we see a P20 Pro model, one that many hope will have three main cameras. Triple cameras aside, Blass has an amazing track record when it comes to smartphone leaks. Huawei P20 (with two, not...

Astronomers have searched for signs of the earliest stars and found the first light ever to shine in the universe.

The Telegraph reports astronomers used a normal radio antenna placed in the remote Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory located in Western Australia to pick up the signal.

The frequency was especially difficult to find as it's within the same range as many radio stations and those naturally emitted from the Milky Way. National Science Foundation program director, Dr Peter Kurcynski described the task as "It's like being in the middle of a hurricane and trying to hear the flap of a hummingbird’s wing.”

While we stand firmly behind the show, in light of the recent tragic events in Florida and out of respect for the victims, their families and loved ones, we feel the right thing to do is delay the premiere until later this year."

In the tapestry of Best Picture winners, there are more than a few films that are sorely – and often shockingly – missing. These are the movies that a lot of people assume won Best Picture, but in fact, never did. Oftentimes, it was a lesser picture (at least in retrospect) that took home the Academy’s highest honor. For example, The King’s Speech taking the prize over The Social Network. Or La La Land oh so briefly being an Oscar winner before it was revealed Moonlight had actually won.

Whether it was an upset or an oversight, we thought it’d be fun, with Oscar Sunday fast approaching, to list off some of the films commonly mistaken as Best Pictures, even though they never got the recognition from the Academy.

While the latest update for Super Mario Odyssey added Luigi's Balloon World, it also patched out several glitches, including a major one used by speedrunners.

As detailed in our Super Mario Odyssey cheats and secrets guide, prior to the update, players could perform a trick where they capture a frog mid-air with Cappy and find themselves hovering in a glitched swimming position. Speedrunners took advantage of this glitch to quickly clear the game's Darker Side area.

IGN can verify Luigi's Balloon World update has removed this glitch from the game.

Since its debut in the third season of The Clone Wars, Mortis has been one of the most unique and divisive elements in the Star Wars canon.

Combining strands of Force mysticism and ancient Jedi lore in ways never before seen in a Star Wars story, Mortis continues to be a much debated topic in the fandom; and this week on Star Wars Rebels, its presence was felt again.

A three episode story arc in The Clone Wars, the Mortis episodes find Anakin Skywalker, Ahsoka Tano, and Obi-Wan Kenobi responding to a Jedi distress code that appears to be thousands of years old. Upon arriving, they’re drawn into a strange, diamond-shaped monolith, and transported into what appears to be an entirely different dimension.

Three new iPhones are reportedly in the works to be released by Apple this year.

According to Bloomberg, Apple is working on three different devices to target a wider range of customers after the iPhone X sold less than expected potentially, in part possibly due to reported production delays.

The trio of smartphones reportedly includes a large "phablet" — a phone nearing the size of a tablet — which will be the biggest iPhone ever, a new phone similar in size to the iPhone X, and a cheaper model with fewer features.

Nokia is having a blast at MWC this year, having announced both a new flagship (the Nokia 8 Sirocco) as well as the Nokia 7 plus, perhaps the most intriguing device in its current roster. It's a premium midranger powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 660, in theory promising to give you most of the performance of a phone powered by an 8-series chip, but for a fraction of the price. The Nokia 7 plus will cost €399 when it hits the streets, and you get plenty of hardware for that amount. An 18:9 screen, Nokia's first? Check. A dual rear camera setup with 2x optical zoom? Check. I know, I know. You're all like "Fowler, shut the hell up with your John Cena vs. The Undertaker obsession. You suck! And you smell like poo!"

True, I haven't exactly been coy about wanting to see Cena face Undertaker in the Deadman's (advertised as such) last match in WWE. In fact, the only person I'm sure wants to see this match happen more than me is...well, John Cena.

Last year, Cena vs. Undertaker was one of the rumored WrestleMania bouts but the the decision was made to put Taker against Roman Reigns and Cena was left in the lurch. He wasn't too publicly vocal about it though he did bring it up, during a promo against The Miz (where in insisted he didn't have the pull everyone thinks he has), who'd, at that point, become his WrestleMania opponent. He basically said something like "If I really had the type of power you think I have, I'd be facing Undertaker instead of you."

While the $52.4 billion merger/acquisition of 20th Century Fox by Disney lumbers forward like Galactus on his way to devour a planet, Fox's Marvel movie plans continue unabated -- for the moment, at least. And aside from the various X-Men flicks in development, that also includes a "secret" Silver Surfer project that is being written by Saga and  Y: The Last Man writer/creator Brian K. Vaughan.

The Hollywood Reporter has this news in a story today about the unusual position that Fox execs find themselves in while they await the Disney acquisition. And while no other details were revealed regarding the Silver Surfer movie, it does make sense since we already knew that the studio was looking for ways to utilize their other non-X-Men Marvel characters, namely the Fantastic Four and that group's associated characters. Legion showrunner Noah Hawley had previously been reported to be working on a Doctor Doom movie. Both Doom and the Surfer are classic FF players.

April is an exciting time for Hearthstone fans each year, as it’s when the game changes the most. Not only is a new expansion released, but it marks the beginning of a new Hearthstone year; when a full year’s worth of cards leave the Standard format. Suddenly hundreds of staple cards – some of which the community has been playing with for up to two years – are gone, and the game is turned on its head.

This year’s set rotation will see us say goodbye to the Year of the Mammoth (and with it the cards from Whispers of the Old Gods, One Night in Karazhan and Mean Streets of Gadgetzan) and say hello to the Year of the Raven. What the first expansion will be, we don’t know yet (but you can take a guess based on the teaser image below), but we do know that there are some important changes coming.
