Ready Player One Doesn't Have a Post-Credits Scene, But Should It Have?

Posted by Payton Wilmott On Saturday, March 31, 2018 0 comments

Ready Player One does not have a post-credits scene, despite the fact that it very well could have.

Ernest Cline, the author of Ready Player One, confirmed he's working on a sequel to his 2011 sci-fi novel. Given that he co-wrote the screenplay for the Steven Spielberg-directed film adaptation, he presumably could have included a little tease after the credits, hinting at what the future might hold.

During a livestream interview (via ScreenRant) promoting the premiere of a new trailer for Ready Player One, Cline confirmed he's working on a sequel novel. "It's true," he said. "I can't talk about it too much, but there's no better inspiration for a writer

Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of Ready Player One, and the myriad Easter eggs therein, has finally hit theaters, and blessedly, is really, really fun.

Fans of the book should be delighted with how the OASIS is realized but, as with any adaptation, some facets of Ernest Cline’s world are significantly changed in the jump to the big screen. Watch the video above or read below to see what we're calling the five most noteworthy book vs. movie changes below.

Full spoilers follow, for both the book and film adaptation of Ready Player One.

While finding all three of OASIS creator James Halliday’s hidden keys is necessary to unlock his easter egg, the novel actually features even more obstacles for Parzival and the legions of gunters. The book’s hunt required Gunters to find a key, follow the clue included with that key to a matching gate, use it to enter the gate and complete a challenge of some kind, and repeat. In the book, those challenges are as follows:

Pokemon Go is celebrating April Fool's Day by switching to 8-bit graphics, which players can experience in the game starting today.

"Experience Pokemon Go like never before with cutting-edge 8-bit graphics!" an announcement post on the game's official website humorously reads. "Registering approximately twice the definition of 4K, the chunky squares of each pixel provide realistic detail and unbelievable definition."

Check out the slideshow below for a look at the 8-bit aesthetic:

Pokemon Go's 8-bit style isn't the only recent addition to Niantic Labs' augmented reality mobile game. Earlier this week, the mythical Pokemon Mew was added to the game through a new quest system.

Earlier today, we dug up some info on an alleged Galaxy A6 and A6+ pair, currently in the works. Some extra snooping around also led us to interesting finds on a few other Samsung devices, all bearing the SM-J720 model number, in a few typical variants - M, D/DS, F and F/DS. Examining current and old J-series model numbers leads us to believe this is likely the Galaxy J7 (2018). On to particulars, then. FCC documentation is rarely very descriptive in terms of internals, but it does cite exact dimensions for the device - 153mm x 76mm. With diagonal measurement set at 162mm for the...

What would happen if you mixed the fast-paced futuristic racing of F-Zero with the colorful co-operative play of Splatoon 2? Well, you'd probably end up with a game that's remarkably close to Trailblazers, a new racer that aims to combine a unique track-painting mechanic with a critical focus on strategic team-based racing.

Sounds pretty compelling right? Trailblazers is a passion project that stems from indie developer SuperGonk Games, which has an exceptional amount of talent on its side, ranging from the now-defunct studio Lionhead (Fable) as well as Codemasters and Bizarre Creations. Codemasters has rapidly become one of the most experienced racing-focused studios in the world, responsible for both the DiRT and GRID series, while Bizarre Creations brought us the highly popular Project Gotham Racing series. So when it comes to racing game experience, SuperGonk knows what it's doing.

EA’s public perception might be worse than ever. 2017 saw the company publicly criticized for Star Wars: Battlefront 2’s perceived pay-to-win multiplayer, Mass Effect: Andromeda’s quality issues at launch, and the sudden closure of Visceral Games. People saying they won’t buy another EA game aren’t uncommon, and while I generally agree that ‘vote with your wallet’ is a good practice, the people hurt the most by that when it comes to EA Originals (like Fe and A Way Out) are the independent developers making those games, not EA.

Vivo Y71 mid-ranger pops up on TENAA

Posted by Payton Wilmott On 0 comments

A new member of Vivo's mid-range family is apparently on its way. A pair of listing for an Y71 and Y71A on TENAA offer up quite a few details, with other industry sources filling in pretty much all the rest of the gaps, with more specs, product images, launch date and a price. Unlike the recently spotted Y85, the Y71 sports a classic notch-less design on its 5.99-inch, 1440 x 720pixel panel. It is housed within what, based on the antenna lines, is probably a metal unibody, measuring 155.87 x 75.74 x 7.8 mm and weighing in at 150 grams. Interestingly enough, there appears to be no...

Ever since the All-New, All-Different Marvel relaunch in 2015, there's been a giant, Fantastic Four-shaped hole in Marvel's comic book lineup. At long last, Marvel is finally filling that hole with the announcement that Dan Slott and Sara Pichelli are launching a new Fantastic Four comic in August. But as nice as it is to see Marvel's First Family returning to prominence again, it's hard to ignore the shabby way they've been treated over the last three years. Marvel has a long, uphill battle ahead of it if it's going to prove to readers that the Fantastic Four are truly a priority again.

Marvel hasn't published a dedicated Fantastic Four comic since canceling the previous series in May 2015. And while Human Torch and the Thing have popped up here and there in the years since, Reed Richards and his family have essentially been MIA since the end of Secret Wars. A series that once served as one of the fundamental pillars of the Marvel Universe quietly disappeared from the shelves. Not even the arrival of a new Fantastic Four movie was enough to revive the team's comic book prospects.

DC just wrapped up the massive crossover that is Dark Nights: Metal, and while there was plenty to like about this epic storyline, there were also a few head-scratching moments over the course of the series. From Batman's bad behavior to a questionable Sandman cameo, these are the biggest questions we have in the aftermath of Metal.

The first issue of Metal turned a lot of heads thanks to its cliffhanger, which saw Batman turning to none other than Dream of the Endless for help in his quest. Considering how rarely characters from the Sandman franchise interact with the lowly heroes of the DCU, that was a pretty big deal.

And then... nothing. We barely caught a glimpse of Dream for the rest of the series. The end result of this latest DC/Sandman crossover is that a single book went missing in Dream's library. No doubt that loose end will pay off when DC launches the Neil Gaiman-curated Sandman imprint later this year. But in the context of Metal itself, that much ballyhooed Sandman crossover seems to have been much ado about nothing.

But that's certainly not the case, as Star Wars: The Last Jedi's special effects supervisor Chris Corbould could tell you. From Force-destroyed huts to scores of falling bombs and beyond, many of the effects in The Last Jedi were created the good old-fashioned practical way.

On the occasion of The Last Jedi's release on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital, I spoke to Corbould -- who has worked on everything from The Dark Knight to a bunch of James Bond movies to The Who's rock opera Tommy. He broke down some of the secrets of his trade...

Frozen zombies might be the focus for the next potential The Walking Dead spinoff series, at least according to executive producer Greg Nicotero.

In an interview with FANDOM, Nicotero revealed he would want a new spinoff to be located in a cold environment where the main characters would have to go up against frozen zombies. “The one thing that the comic book does great

when they introduce the cold weather and the winter,” Nicotero said. “I had even written some webisodes that took place with a frozen zombie herd."

Sony's latest flagship smartphones are now up for pre-order in the US, at B&H specifically. The retailer wants $799.99 of your hard earned cash for the XZ2, and $649.99 for the XZ2 Compact. In both cases, $0 tax is collected outside of NY and NJ. Unfortunately B&H doesn't list a shipping date for either model. Anyway, what you're getting if you pre-order is an unlocked phone that will work on GSM-based carriers such as AT&T, T-Mobile, and...

After 13 seasons and 280 episodes, Supernatural has once again done the impossible -- pulling off a concept that's so inventive, ambitious, and downright insane, no other series would dare attempt it.

Episode 16 of Season 13, "ScoobyNatural" (airing March 29), is a crossover between the fan-favorite CW series and Warner Bros. Animation's classic animated franchise Scooby-Doo, and despite the sheer audacity of the idea, it succeeds on pretty much every level thanks to the efforts of the cast, writers Jim Krieg and Jeremy Adams, and the team of animators, who aren't afraid to blur the lines between Scooby-Doo's kid-friendly approach and Supernatural's decidedly more mature tone.

Director Michael Gracey has provided an update on the potential live-action Naruto film, saying if series creator Masashi Kishimoto isn't on board, the project won't happen.

In an interview with Collider, Gracey explained he's concerned about getting the movie right and doing justice to the original anime. The filmmaker wants to closely work with Kishimoto on the project and won't do it unless Kishimoto is "excited" about the script.

"So many Hollywood adaptations of really popular manga series just don’t get it right, and for me what was really important was that if I was gonna do Naruto, I wanted to actually work with Kishimoto and get a script to a stage where he would look at it and be excited about realizing it," Gracey said. "Because no one knows the world better than the person who created it."

Today Apple is releasing iOS 11.3, watchOS 4.3, and tvOS 11.3 to everyone with a compatible device. iOS 11.3 iOS has gone through a few beta builds recently, and now version 11.3 is finally ready for primetime. It includes the self-explanatory Battery Health tool that the company promised following the iPhone throttling scandal. This tells you whether your device has experienced an unexpected shutdown because the battery was unable to deliver the necessary peak power. When that happens it will apply "performance management" (don't call it throttling) to prevent such things...

Yo-Yo's recovery process has been slow and heartbreaking to watch, but hope emerged in "Principia" when Mack (Henry Simmons) retrieved two robotic arms to help get his partner back in fighting shape, and in episode 16, "Inside Voices" (airing April 6), we'll see her put them to good use. Ahead of the episode's debut, IGN has an exclusive first look at Yo-Yo with her high-tech new arms below.

While Valve’s next game isn’t what many people were hoping for when it was initially announced, it’s still shaping up to be a whole lot of fun. Artifact is a Dota 2-themed digital card game that breaks a lot of the norms you might expect from a Digital TCG, then injects it chock full of lore and love for the MOBA it’s built around.

We went and played Artifact at Valve and seriously enjoyed it, but for two very different reasons. Miranda has over 1,200 hours in Dota 2, while Tom has tried basically every digital card released in the last three years. Odds are you might also find yourself further to one side of that venn diagram, so here’s what we thought of our time with Artifact from each of those perspectives.

Huawei has worked hard to stay at the forefront of camera innovation, but it hasn't forgotten about displays. The company has patented a foldable smartphone that opens and closes like a book. The patent was filed with WIPO on September 19 last year and published today. The mechanism looks similar to the Microsoft Surface Book, but seems to leave a much smaller gap. The display - a single panel, rather than two like the Axon M - and should be tablet-sized when fully open. The patent doesn't address how the device will be used when it's closed. It may be hard to remember now that Disney dominates the box office every year with Marvel and Star Wars movies, but there was a long time when House of Mouse couldn't make a successful action movie to save their lives.

Granted, there are exceptions to this rule. Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean movies are blockbuster hits, the National Treasure movies made a killing, and the original 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea is still a classic. But for the most part Disney usually seemed to have trouble making action-packed movies that could compete with other studios' kick-butt blockbusters, which probably explains why they felt the need to buy pre-existing franchises that already had a huge built-in audience.

Written by Scott Snyder | Drawn by Greg Capullo w/ Various Artists

"Dark Nights: Metal has certainly lived up to its name, cramming in all sorts of heavy metal-worthy imagery and crazy situations. That doesn't change one bit in the finale. The downside is that the series continues to be too overstuffed for its own good in its final chapter. As good a job as it does hyping up what's to come for the DCU, it doesn't quite carry the same weight as Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo's best Batman stories." -Jesse

“We want to make the best dinosaurs you’ve ever seen,” said Jurassic World Evolutions’  Executive producer Rich Theobold, before revealing a ceratosaurus, its thunderous footsteps shaking the room as the devs let it loose into their custom-build park. Its pebbled skin glistens in the sunlight, a John Williams-alike score soars in the background.

It was a very good looking dinosaur, and one of over 30 (at launch) in Evolution, Frontier’s business sim set in the Jurassic Park/World universe where the goal is to build your own park empire. I’ll admit that the dinos were what I was here for; I’m a big series fan but relatively green when it comes to the genre. Fortunately Evolution feels accessible off the bat, and better still, deeply Jurassic Park-esque, an extension of the movie series rather than a sim with the good fortune to have the license.

THQ Nordic has announced a pun-tastic remaster of Red Faction: Guerilla coming to PC, PS4 and Xbox One in Q2 2018.

Red Faction: Guerrilla Re-Mars-tered edition features native 4K support, improved lighting and shadow rendering, and fully reworked graphics. Xbox One X support will also be available at launch.

You can take a sneak peek at what all of that amounts to in the gallery below.

Guerrilla is set in 2125, 50 years after the events of Red Faction. The insurgent guerrilla fighters of the newly re-established Red Faction take on the Earth Defense Force to liberate Mars from its oppressive regime.

The original game was released in 2009, and we gave it an 8/10 for both the PC and console version, which didn't have the strongest story and character development, but there was great fun to be had elsewhere, with our reviewer saying, "the addictive thrill of pummeling buildings into tiny bits is something you won't regret experiencing."

Is it odd that the Galaxy Note9 was spotted at Geekbench this early? It isn't if the report of an accelerated time frame is true. And apparently, it's Galaxy S9's fault. The launch of the second 2018 flagship may come as early as July or August, based on info that Samsung Display is pulling up the AMOLED production for the Note9 from June to April, says Korean publication The Investor. Mario's wardrobe is getting updated again, with a baseball uniform and a somewhat obscure reference to Nintendo's Japanese Super Famicom add-on, the Satellaview outfit.

We cite the five most noteworthy deviations below.

State of Decay 2 throws a lot of mayhem your way in the simulated zombie apocalypse. From general run-of-the-mill zombies, zombies in full body armor, zombies in clown attire (which adds a whole new level of creepy issues to work through), and the apex predators of the zombie horde – the Freaks.

Chief among those monstrosities are the Juggernauts, towering mountains of flesh and hunger that Undead Labs’ CEO Jeff Strain calls, “community enders.” To put that into context, in State of Decay 2, you don’t play a single character, but rather a collective of survivors. When one person dies, you can swap into another survivor and carry on. And that’s why a Juggernaut is so terrifying – it can kill everyone if you’re not careful.
