Black Panther Opening Weekend Smashes Box Office Records

Black Panther is breaking box office records left and right, as weekend estimates in North America continue to climb for the latest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The film is estimated to make $192 million over its first three days at the domestic box office and somewhere between $218 million and $222 million over the four-day Presidents Day weekend. This puts the film well ahead of Deadpool's 2016 record of $152 million, setting a new for both Presidents Day weekend and the month of February.

On top of that, Black Panther has surpassed Beauty and the Beasts' $174 million record for the biggest pre-summer opening weekend of all time, as well as Iron Man 3's record as the highest grossing solo superhero movie in history. The Ryan Coogler-directed film also broke the record for the biggest debut for a film by a black director, soaring well past F. Gary Gray's The Fate of the Furious, which opened to $98.8 million last year.
