On close inspection, the premise behind 2016’s Orwell: Keeping an Eye On You is a bit daft. An episodic, choose-your-own-adventure visual novel/puzzle game of sorts developed by German indie team Osmotic Studios, the first season of Orwell introduced players to a powerful government surveillance system dubbed, well, Orwell.
The system scrapes together information from all corners of the game’s in-universe internet, from public social media accounts to news outlets and other third-party websites, and also allows us to snoop into private messages, emails, phone call transcriptions, and even the personal devices and files of persons of interest.
